The importance of car maintenance

Engine oil is engine lubricating oil. Its function is to lubricate the components between the engines, and it has a certain function of cooling and heat dissipation, as well as auxiliary cooling and cooling, sealing and leakage prevention, rust and corrosion prevention, shock absorption and buffering and other functions.

Replacing engine oil and filter are the most basic and important two of all maintenance items for a car. So how long is the general oil shelf life? How to save, how to identify whether it has deteriorated? Let’s take a look.

Oil shelf life

1. Unopened engine oil: This shelf life is generally about 3-5 years, and of course there are engine oils with a shelf life of more than ten years.

2. The oil to be poured into the engine: mineral oil, semi-synthetic oil and fully synthetic oil of different brands have different validity periods, please refer to the manufacturer’s recommendation. (Generally, mineral oil is 5,000 kilometers or half a year; semi-synthetic oil is 7,500 kilometers or 8 months; full synthetic oil is 10,000 kilometers or one year)

3. Oil remaining after maintenance: The oil left after maintenance, if stored properly, can be kept for about 1 year. Of course, for the sake of insurance, it is recommended to use it for about half a year.

The dangers of spoiled oil

The use of oil after the expiration date will cause great damage to the car engine, such as poor lubrication effect and weakened cooling effect, which will affect the service life and stable operation of the car engine.

1. Reduced sealing effect: high-quality oil with appropriate viscosity can effectively block the gap between the cylinder block and the piston to prevent gas leakage. If the oil deteriorates, it will make the oil water-like and lose its sealing effect.

2. Reduced cooling effect: The heat absorption and thermal conductivity of oil is much higher than that of water. If the oil deteriorates seriously, the heat dissipation function will be greatly reduced.

3. Reduced lubricating effect: The viscosity of the oil makes it have strong adhesion, which can form a protective film between gears and shafts and other parts to make them run smoothly and reduce wear and tear. Deteriorated oil basically loses this effect.

4. Reduced cleaning effect: The friction between metal parts will produce debris, and combustion will produce impurities such as carbon deposits. If the oil fails, these impurities can deposit between the parts of the engine and cause harm to the operation of the engine.

How to tell if oil has deteriorated

The easiest way to check the shelf life of car oil is to observe whether the viscosity of the oil has changed, whether the smell of the oil has faded, and whether the color of the oil has changed.

And the most likely to affect the performance of the oil is water. The method of checking is very simple. “Shake it” before use. If white foam appears, it means that the oil has entered the water and can no longer be used!

Properly store remaining oil

1. After the maintenance is completed in the 4S shop or repair factory, immediately cover the oil bottle or barrel cover with a layer of clean plastic film (preservation film is very useful) on the bottle or barrel mouth and screw it on. In this way, the sealing effect is better, and if conditions permit, you can also drop wax on the lid to seal.

2. Put the sealed oil in a cool and dry place, and make sure that the sun will not shine, so as to avoid the oxidation reaction of the oil, such as the corner of the wall.

3. Take out the oil that has been stored for a long time in the next maintenance. It is not recommended for the owner to continue to use it. If it is for emergency use, remember not to shake it before use. Do not pour it completely into the engine during the process of adding it, and keep a part of it. Generally speaking, the oil stored for a long time has a slight amount of moisture. Adding it to the engine will affect its performance, and even in serious cases, it will lead to failures such as engine bearing, crankshaft annealing, and cylinder pulling.
