The working environment of gear oil.

Gear oil should have good anti-wear and load resistance properties and suitable viscosity. It is mainly based on petroleum lubricating oil base oil or synthetic lubricating oil, adding extreme pressure anti-wear agent and oleaginous agent to modulate an important lubricant. It is used in various gear transmission devices to prevent tooth surface wear, abrasion, sintering, etc., prolong its life and improve the efficiency of power transmission.

Gear oil generally requires the following six basic properties.

1)suitable viscosity and good viscosity temperature, viscosity is the most basic performance of gear oil. Viscosity, the formation of the lubricant film is thicker, the load resistance is relatively large.

2)Adequate extreme pressure anti-wear. Extreme pressure anti-wear is the most important property and the main characteristic of gear oil. It is the performance to prevent the tooth surface wear, abrasion and gluing in the movement.

3)Good anti-emulsification. Gear oil emulsification deterioration in water will seriously affect the formation of lubricating oil film and cause abrasion and wear.

4)Good oxidation stability and thermal stability. Good thermal oxidation stability ensures the service life of the oil.

5)Good anti-foaming property. The foam generated cannot disappear quickly will affect the oil film formation at the gear mesh, and the entrained foam will reduce the actual working oil volume and affect the heat dissipation.

6)Good anti-rust and anti-corrosion.

In addition, gear oil should have some other properties, such as adhesion, shear stability, etc.

Working conditions

Various mechanical transmission mechanism gears, according to their axes in relation to each other, can be divided into parallel shaft drive, intersecting shaft drive and staggered shaft drive. Each type of transmission according to the shape of the gears and teeth and different transmission methods, such as parallel shaft transmission of straight cylindrical gears, helical cylindrical gears, herringbone teeth cylindrical gears; intersecting shaft transmission of straight bevel gears, helical bevel gears, spiral bevel gears; staggered shaft transmission of hyperbolic gears, worm gears, spiral transmission.

Gear transmission characteristics and gear oil working conditions

l) high efficiency of gear transmission, general cylindrical gear transmission efficiency of up to 98%, compared with the bearing, gear equivalent curve radius is small, poor oil wedge conditions.

2) gear transmission between the teeth and teeth is a linear contact, therefore, the contact area is small, the unit contact pressure is high. General automotive gear unit contact pressure up to 2000-3000MPa, and double curve gear higher, up to 3000 a 4000MPa.

3)Gear transmission is not only line contact, there is sliding contact, especially double-curved gears, the teeth have a high relative sliding speed, generally up to 8m / o or so. This will make the oil film thinning and even local rupture under high speed and high load conditions, leading to increased friction and wear, and even cause abrasions and bites.

4) gear oil operating temperature is generally lower than the internal combustion engine oil, to a large extent with the ambient temperature changes, the vehicle gear oil temperature is generally not higher than 100’C. Modern cars use double-curve gear, because of its axis offset is larger, at high speeds will make the gear wheel surface ask the relative sliding speed is very high, so that the oil temperature reaches 160℃~180℃.
